How a Tamil Nadu seat is decided

Three facts explain most of what surprises people about this state’s cutoffs.

Your community decides your turn, not a separate list

Everyone sits in one merit list. The communal roster — OC, BC, BCM, MBC/DNC, SC, SCA and ST — decides which turn in that list a seat is offered on, which is why cutoffs are published per community. OC is not a community you have to belong to: it is the open turn, and a candidate from any community who is high enough takes it.

Management seats are not reserved by community

Self-financing seats do not run the communal roster. They are filled as general management, NRI, or a minority stream — Telugu, Christian, Malayalam. So a “BC management cutoff” is not a real threshold; it would only ever be the worst-ranked BC candidate who happened to take a seat there. Anyone quoting you one is reading the list wrongly.

A rank list gives you two numbers — use the right one

Tamil Nadu rank lists print your overall rank and your rank within your community side by side, and cutoffs are quoted against the overall one. Reading “312th in BC” as a general rank of 312 puts the best colleges in the state in front of somebody who cannot reach them. Check which number you are holding before you compare it to anything.

Who runs Tamil Nadu NEET UG counselling?
The Selection Committee under the Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu. It admits to the state quota in government and self-financing medical and dental colleges, using your NEET score against its own state merit list — separate from the MCC's All India Quota counselling.
Is there a local candidate rule in Tamil Nadu?
Not in the way Telangana has one. Tamil Nadu runs a single merit list for the whole state rather than splitting seats between local and non-local candidates, so there is no district-based eligibility test to clear. Eligibility turns on the state's own nativity and schooling requirements, which the Selection Committee sets out in its prospectus each cycle — confirm those before you register.
How does the communal roster affect my cutoff?
Tamil Nadu allots on one merit list with a communal roster, so your community — OC, BC, BCM, MBC/DNC, SC, SCA or ST — decides which turn in that roster you are competing for. Cutoffs are published and discussed per community for this reason. OC is open to everyone: a candidate from any community who is high enough in the list takes an OC seat, which is the ordinary case rather than an exception.
What is the difference between government and management quota?
They are separate competitions. Government seats run the communal roster described above. Management seats in self-financing colleges do not — they are not reserved by community at all, and are filled as general management, NRI, or a minority stream such as Telugu, Christian or Malayalam minority. A community-wise management cutoff is therefore not a meaningful number, which is why you will not see one quoted here.
Does NEET Companion predict Tamil Nadu state quota seats today?

That is a separate reservation for candidates who studied in Tamil Nadu government schools, and its counselling is run offline by the Selection Committee. It is out of scope for anything we publish — treat the Committee's own notifications as the authority on it.
